MARITAL UNION WITH CHRIST
(Continuing the series by A.T. Pierson, published in 1896.)
A.T. Pierson says that the illustration of marriage is the most
complete illustration of the believer's union with Christ. He
refers specifically to a situation where a partner has died, and
the surviving partner marries another person.
"The great central point whence we must survey the marriage
relation as the chosen symbol and parable of the Believer's union
with Christ is this - the identity of life founded upon love. It
will be seen that we have constantly been mounting higher and
higher in the study of this great argument. In the Judicial union
it was the identity of the last Adam with those whom he
represented as Head of a Race; in the Vital union it was the
identity of the Lord of Life with those whom, by His Spirit, He
quickens. In the Practical union, it was the identity of a Leader
and Champion with those who follow him; and in the Actual union it
was the Identity of a Sovereign and Master with those who yield to
Him in holy subjection.
"But now it is the identity of Husband with the Wife who is to
him bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh. Partnership indeed, but
the highest of which we know. Let us stop to notice the closeness
of this unity and the perfection of this identity."

THE FATHER WITHIN by Walter Lanyon
"When Jesus lifted up His eyes unto heaven and said, "Thank you,
Father," this all-embracing statement was so filled with
revelation that it burst the shell of a thousand limitations...
"Because Jesus knew the kingdom of heaven within, it was
manifested without. This contact of Father and son is the one
thing necessary. When we are in union, the results always follow.
At no time did Jesus consider, weigh or handle the evidence by the
standard of physical sense. "Judge not by appearances," He
cautioned. Disregarding it all, He went within to His Father; and
whatever He could ask of the Father, that could He manifest...
"Once you become aware of the One who indwells you, at that
moment you receive "whatever" you "ask for" in His name, whatever
He has inwardly authorized you to ask as if He were the One
asking."

MIRACLES INVOLVING NATURE
"If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes"
(Mark 9:23)
Another vast area where miracles are seen is in the changing of
natural conditions or material structures. One of the first that
comes to mind is the parting of the Red Sea in Exodus 14. The
children of Israel were fleeing from the armies of Egypt and they
found themselves in a place of great peril. In front of them lay
the Red Sea and behind them the pursuing hosts of Pharaoh. God
commanded Moses to stretch his rod over the sea and promised that
the nation of Israel would walk over on dry ground. And this is
exactly what happened. Notice that man was commanded to do a
simple, natural act--anyone can lift up a walking stick. However,
when man makes the first move, God energizes that act and a
miracle takes place.
The battle of Jericho, when the walls came tumbling down
(Joshua 6) is an example of a miracle involving material
structures. Again, man's part was a perfectly natural act--
shouting--and God energized that act and the miracle took place.
A New Testament example can be found in Matthew 8:23-27, the
record of the stilling of the storm on the sea of Galilee. The
"great tempest" (NKJV) became "a great calm". It is important to
note the words of Jesus, "'Why are you fearful, O you of little
faith?' Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea. And there
was a great calm" (Matthew 8:26). He seems to imply that if the
disciples had exercised their faith, they would have calmed the
sea and not disturbed Him. How true this is!
Miracles are part of the normal pattern of life for a believer
and if my need involves a change of weather, or a change of some
material structure, then it is possible, for "All things are
possible to him who believes" (Mark 9:23). (From "You Are A New
Creation", Chapter 5, by Peter Wade, adapted by Hildy Matthews.)
AFFIRMATION: I adopt a miracle consciousness and expect the
miracle-working power of God inside me to be manifested for God's
glory.

INSIGHTS FROM EVERY CHAPTER OF THE BIBLE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
G. Campbell Morgan was a well-known preacher and writer of over
60 books from the first half of the 20th century. In this spot
each issue we reproduce a comment from one verse in every chapter
of the Bible. We continue with Paul's first letter to Timothy.
"The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil" (I Timothy
6:10)
Not money, but the love of it. Money is not a root of evil.
Neither is it a root of good. It is non-moral. It may be the
greatest curse that can come into a human life. It may be the
instrument of untold good. Much depends upon the use of it.
Everything depends ultimately upon the attitude of the soul toward
it.
Where we have three words in this statement, "love of money,"
the Greek has but one, and perhaps the word in our common speech
which best conveys the thought is the word "avarice." It is not
covetousness. That is also a root of evil, but it is not the same
thing exactly as avarice! Covetousness is a desire to gain
possession of money, or indeed anything. Avarice is love-of-money,
for itself. It is often the low motive of covetousness; but there
may be covetousness from other motives.
Love of money is just that, the love of it, that hoards and
holds. It is indeed a root of all kinds of evil. It dries up the
springs of compassion in the soul. It lowers the whole standard of
morality. It is the inspiration of all the basest things, even
covetousness; for if there may be covetousness without love-of-
money, there is never love-of-money without covetousness. Yet how
insidious a peril this is! It is sometimes created by prosperity
and the consequent possession of money. It is often powerfully
present in lives which are devoid of wealth. It is wholly
material, the result of a wrong conception of life, due to
forgetfulness of the fact that "a man's life consisteth not in the
abundance of the things which he possesseth."
