The statistics for our site for May 2003 show our highest visitor count yet! (We've been on the web since October 1995.) The number of visitor sessions has doubled since this time last year. Also, in May some 11% of visitors listened to an audio teaching, and this tripled our costs for storage and bandwidth. Yet this is the very reason why we are on the web -- to share the positive Word of God. We thank God for this increase. In order to cater for the future, we are in the process of changing our hosting company to give us 150% more storage space and 400% more bandwidth. We believe this will serve our needs better and we will be able to upgrade again in the future. Thank you for your prayers are we go through the adjustment of making this change. It will be transparent to you, but involves much work for our one-man team! Insights From My Writing... Feed the Mind With God’s Word "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:2). The most basic principle of renewing my mind is to feed my mind with God’s Word. Not just once; not just today; but every day. If I study the Bible today and my renewed mind takes care of my life today, it will not take care of tomorrow’s need. Satan will find some new way in which to attack me. It might be financially, physically or some other way, but the wily fellow is always out there waiting for me. God tells me to watch out, to sharpen my thinking because He desires that I have a victorious triumphant life. "Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage" (Galatians 5:1). In studying the importance of renewing the mind, I have discovered that my daily reading and study are guided by God’s instruction. He points out to me what I need to know each day. This, indeed, means that I can rely on spiritual knowledge and not sense knowledge. The epistles to the churches (Romans to Thessalonians) are addressed to me. I have 1766 verses loaded with positive and powerful truths in which God wants me to soak myself. He is showing me that by reading and studying His Word, I will be transformed little by little and will be putting on the mind of Christ. "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (II Timothy 2:15). Sometimes I am overwhelmed by the immensity of God’s instruction. How can I in a lifetime learn all that God wants me to know? The answer lies in the fact that God will show me what I need to learn each day. "Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all" (I Timothy 4:15). (From "Renewing Your Mind", Chapter 6, by Peter Wade, adapted by Hildy Matthews.) Affirmation: I will not just fill my head with Bible words or Bible knowledge. I will feed my mind with an understanding of God’s attitudes, beliefs and concepts which concern me. God does direct my steps. Insights from Every Chapter in the Bible G. Campbell Morgan was a well-known preacher and writer of over 60 books from the first half of the 20th century. In each issue he gives a comment from one verse in every chapter of the Bible. We continue with Paul's letter to the Romans. "As it is written" (Romans 3:4). This is not the first time we have found this phrase in this letter: (see 1:17 and 2:24): neither is it the last occurrence: (see 3:10-18; 4:17; 8:36; 9:13,33; 10:15; 11:8,26; 12:19; 14:11; 15:9,21). In all those cases this formula of reference to the Old Testament is employed. Beyond these, there are many other quotations or allusions thereto. There are at least seventy-three verses in which such direct references are found. This is a most interesting study, as it shows the place which the Old Testament Scriptures occupied in the thinking of Paul, and as it reveals his method with them, and so the real value of them. As to the first, it is to be noticed that he never referred to any Old Testament Scripture in order either to deny or correct its teaching. Every reference or allusion is to the Sacred Writings as authoritative. These quotations are from each section of the Hebrew Bible; Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy; The Prophets: I Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, Joel, Habakkuk, Malachi; and The Writings: Psalms, Proverbs. As to the method of quotation, Paul quoted generally from the Septuagint, and sometimes from the Hebrew, and he constantly changed the actual wording, but never the essential meaning, thus showing us that the truth embodied is authoritative, rather than the particular words employed to convey it. A careful study of these facts will help us to a right attitude toward the Old Testament. Random suggestions...
