Insights From My Writing...

Practice the Presence of God

"Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

When I was still rushing here and going there, I didn’t stop to let God into my mind. In fact, I didn’t know it was available to "listen" to God. I knew from a sense point of view that I now had Christ in me. This happened when I believed Romans 10: 9 and 10: "... that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation".
It was easy to believe these verses and confess them and believe God had invited me personally into His family. In fact, I was so elated and thrilled that I couldn’t wait to learn more and study and read God’s Word. I couldn’t stop talking to others about this great new way of living I had found. I soon learned that others either knew as much or more about the Bible as I or they weren’t interested.
I found some teachers who steered me in the right direction. I soon learned that studying God’s Word and memorizing Bible verses was a personal thing. In order to benefit the most and progress at my own rate, I needed to get quiet, be alone and listen to God. "In quietness and confidence shall be your strength" (Isaiah 30:15), and "You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You" (Isaiah 26:3).
I learned that God is right here in my heart and in my mind. I can talk to Him and He answers me. He directs my thoughts, my prayers, my actions. One of the first passages I memorized years ago was Ephesians 3:16-21. Here is part of the passage: "...that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man... Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen" (Ephesians 3:16,20,21). (From "Renewing Your Mind", Chapter 6, by Peter Wade, adapted by Hildy Matthews.)
Affirmation: I will make a quiet time with my heavenly Father and renew my mind to His Word and to His desires for me. As I practice the presence of God, I receive His benefits and live a day of joy.

It was with deep regret that we learnt of the passing of Hildy Matthews earlier this month. She will be sorely missed... "Costly [precious] in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints" (Psalm 116:15). Since our first electronic newsletter in November 1998, Hildy has contributed these pieces with the aim of finally producing a book of daily devotions, so we are just moving into the tenth week of that book. We have another five adaptations on hand that will appear in coming issues. Thank you, Hildy, for blessing so many people through your work.

Insights from Every Chapter in the Bible
G. Campbell Morgan was a well-known preacher and writer of over 60 books from the first half of the 20th century. In each issue he gives a comment from one verse in every chapter of the Bible. We continue with Paul's letter to the Romans.

"Because the love of God bath been shed abroad in our hearts" (Romans 5:5).

These words lead us a step further in our understanding of the nature of Christian hope. Not only is it true that it triumphs because it knows and believes God. It is also true that it is not put to shame. That is, it is never overthrown or discredited in any way by the circumstances of tribulation through which we must pass in order to its realization. On the contrary, we rejoice in these very tribulations because we realize that they are parts of the working force which is ever operating toward the realization. The secret of this victorious hope is that the love of God hath been poured out in our hearts.
Here the idea is not merely that God loves us, though necessarily that is involved. It is rather that He fills us with His love by the Spirit, so that we love what He loves, and as He loves. That self-emptying sacrificial love becomes the inspiration of all our thinking, of all our doing. And it is more than that. It is the power of all, our service. It is not only patient love which endures; it is mighty love which accomplishes. It is the secret of that abounding toil which never tires until its object is achieved. Where there is such love filling and mastering the life, hope is never put to shame in the processes of tribulation, and it will be ultimately saved from shame as all the toils are vindicated in the glory of the results.
