Insights From My Writing...

A Way of Life

"As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving" (Colossians 2:6).

I have been absorbed for months in learning the importance of renewing my mind to God’s Word. I know the importance of controlling my thinking and adjusting my mind to the truth of God’s Word. One of the most important truths I have learned is that Satan is on my case every day trying to trick me out of God’s blessings. I want those blessings and need them if I am going to live the life God wants for me. So how will I use the knowledge I have been taught?
I need to re-read the positive truths of the renewed mind and drill the principles into my mind so that Christ may dwell in my heart. "That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height -- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:17-19).
I cannot set aside the principles and concepts of the renewed mind. I cannot set my Bible on the shelf. Instead, I need to read these principles each day. I need to study each verse I have been reading. I need to read God’s Word every day. I have to anticipate an attack on my mind each day and must be prepared. Satan does not give up and neither will I!
"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear (I Peter 3:15 KJV). Renewing my mind means I need to have answers not only for others, but especially I must answer Satan’s attacks on my mind by responding with God’s Word. I must keep my mind free from condemnation and guilt. (From "Renewing Your Mind", Last Words, by Peter Wade, adapted by Hildy Matthews.)
Affirmation: I keep my mind free by renewing it to the truths in God’s Word. Today as I study God’s Word, I am putting on the mind of Christ and pleasing God.

This is the final installment of "Renewing the Mind", as adapted by the late Hildy Matthews. Her last words in the text file were: "Thank You, heavenly Father, for the truths of Renewing the Mind. "Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Ephesians 5:20)."

Insights from Every Chapter in the Bible
G. Campbell Morgan was a well-known preacher and writer of over 60 books from the first half of the 20th century. In each issue he gives a comment from one verse in every chapter of the Bible. We continue with Paul's letter to the Romans.

"More than conquerors..." (Romans 8:37).

To conquer is to subdue; that is, to master, to overcome, in the sense of defeating an attack. To conquer tribulation would be to put an end to it; to conquer anguish would be to replace it by joy; to conquer persecution would be to turn it into patronage; to conquer famine would be to provide food; to conquer nakedness would be to provide clothing; to conquer peril would be to secure safety; to conquer the sword would be to destroy the sword. In all these things Paul says we are "more than conquerors."
This does not mean that, in the senses referred to, we conquer, and more. On the contrary, it may mean that we do not conquer at all, but that we do more, we wrest from defeat values that could never be gained by conquest. Enduring tribulation, we are thereby brought, through patience and proving, to the hope that is not put to shame. Experiencing anguish, we are having fellowship with the suffering which saves. Bearing persecution, we are demonstrating the meaning of true godliness. Suffering hunger, we are proving that man does not live by bread alone. In nakedness, we reveal the beauty of spiritual adorning. Living amid perils, we are revealing the power of our Lord. Dying by the sword, we are demonstrating the weakness of the sword. This is more-than-conquering, and it is only possible "through Him that loved us."

Hymns we once sung...

Here's a hymn that is rarely heard. First published in 1891, it actually fits in well with Christmas when we recall the verse "Thou shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). The tune was popular in 19th century campmeetings in the US.

All praise to Him Who reigns above In majesty supreme,
Who gave His Son for man to die That He might man redeem.

     Chorus:
Blessed by the name, blessed by the name, blessed by the name of the Lord (repeated).

His name above all names shall stand, Exalted more and more,
At God the Father's own right hand, where angel hosts adore.

Redeemer, Saviour, Friend of man, once maimed by the fall,
Thou hast devised salvation's plan, For Thou hast died for all.

His name shall be the Counsellor, the might Prince of Peace,
Of all earth's kingdoms Conqueror, whose reign shall never cease.
